Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Hurd´s Letters on Chivalry and Romance: With the Third Elizabethan Dialogue Hurd´s Letters on Chivalry and Romance have been curiously neglected, considering how strong a light they throw upon the trend of critical thought in the second half of the eighteenth century. There has been no separate reprint for more than a century, while the only complete collected edition of his Works appeared as long ago as 1811. It is hoped that this edition of the Third Dialogue and of the Letters on Chivalry and Romance may help to reinstate Hurd in his rightful position among the heralds of the romantic revival in criticism. The text of the Letters has been reprinted from the first edition, which appeared in 1762, and has been carefully collated with that of the last edition which appeared during the author´s lifetime, namely, that of 1788. The variations, other than those which are merely typo graphical, or unimportant changes in spelling and punctuation, are given in footnotes and appendices, and many of them show clearly the advance that was made in Hurd´s critical outlook between these dates. The Dialogue, the authorship of which Hurd did not acknowledge when it first appeared, attributing it in a footnote to the Hon. Robt. Digby, has been reprinted from the edition of 1788. The following is a list of the editions of Letters on Chivalry and Romance and Moral and Political Dialogues: Letters on Chivalry and Romance, 1762 (reprinted in the same year).
