Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Annual of the East Tennessee Wesleyan University, Athens, Tennessee, for the Collegiate Year, 1883-84 In the autumn of 1863 the Holston Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church was reorganized by Bishop Davis W. Clark, D.D., at Athens, Tennessee. The need of a central institution of learning for the white membership which the Church might collect in the Southern States was then recognized and discussed by Bishop Clark and leading men in the then new Southern field. The Athens Female College, the property of which embraced a handsome and commodious three-story brick structure, seventy by fifty feet, together with twelve acres of ground, eligibly located in the miniature city of Athens, the most healthy town in all of Eastern Tennessee, and noted for the morality and culture of its inhabitants, had become involved in heavy debt, had been sold by a decree of Chancery Court, and had been bidden in by its President, the Rev. Erastus Rowley, D.D., who held the greater portion of the claims against it. Dr. Rowley now wished to dispose of the property, and its desirability strongly impressed both Bishop Clark and leading members of the Conference. At the session of the Conference held in the autumn of 1866, a committee was appointed to organize a Conference college, at some point to be decided upon by them as the most suitable. Negotiations with Dr. Rowley were at once begun, and finally, on June 4, 1867, the property was by him transferred to a Board of Trustees, "for the use and behoof of the Holston Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church." On March 9, 1867, by a special act of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, the institution was chartered as the East Tennessee Wesleyan College, and Pereival C. Wilson, M.A., was chosen as President. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
