The writer has not gone in quest of subjects for poetic delineation, the lines rather having been the result of obeying the promptings of the spirit. I have long been a lover of the beautiful and the sublime in Nature and art and of all the good qualities of mankind and, while my limited education has not permitted my enjoying them to the fullest extent, I have reflected, so far as possible, my appreciation and gratification in the lines I have so humbly penned. While I have burned much midnight oil in the completion of some of the poems and songs, it has been to me a labor of love and, if they serve in any way to instruct or entertain, the writer feels that he will have accomplished a useful mission.
