In these circumstances I have gladly adopted the suggestion of Mr. Murray that my historical sketch of the Versions should be included in his popular series of one shilling volumes, in the belief that it may thus be made accessible to the widest circle of readers. At his request I have also consented to alter the original title of "The Evolution of the English Bible" to one which, while accurately describing the nature of the book, will, it is hoped, appeal more directly to the general reader.
