Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Lady of Winderslee: A Saintly Romance, and Other Poems The Lady of Winderslee is one of my juvenile works. It may have many faults. It was written by a mountain boy in a wood-chopper´s cabin. In explanation of the poem I will say that six years are supposed to have elapsed between the date of the episode mentioned in Idyl I. and that of Idyl III., and some months additional between Idyls III. and IV. In the latter space occurred the death of the mother of our heroine, which seems to have caused a deep melancholy to pervade her nature, once so cheerful, and awaken a sublime spirituality having dealings with prophecy. It should not be supposed that "Calla Land" (declared to have been an ancient hingdam) was located just over the "spicy mountains" from the "Vale of Agawan," for I would remind my readers that the body of the work is eminently American in character, so that this "Calla (lily)" Land existed only in the fruitful imagination of the weird singer, who suited the name to the partial ear of the lover of the lilies, to whom, no doubt, his song was specially directed. It is a notable fact that our Blessed Master from among the thousand flowers of Judea chose the lily to illustrate His gospel to man, complimenting its beauty, thereby giving it a most distinguished place in the history of flowers.
