If this be so, how are we to make it yield its voice to the human conscience and to human hopes? We cannot use it as an oracle. We must take possession of it as a history, before we can construct it into a system. Thus to pass behind the veil of antiquity is the only method of rising to a genuine appreciation of the mind of Christ, or of attaining a clear vision of the perfect religion which it enshrines. - Martineau.
