Excerpt from Savillon´s Elegies, or Poems Most of the following Poems have appeared in our different Journals, under the signatures of J. W. Solander, Nox, &c. The principal object of arranging them in their present form, is to gratify the wishes of particular friends, and I lament on this account, that many of my juvenile performances, (and among them some of those which I prized the most) are loft or destroyed; such, however, as I have been able to collect, are here intruded to their notice. - Written at a period, ere taste had refined, or judgment sufficiently ripened the understanding, they were never intended to brave the Critic´s rod, nor to vie for the mead of praise, and their beauties (if they possess any) consist more in the pensive language of sentiment, than in the rapid and sometimes unintelligible flight of superior genius to the Parnassian Mount.
