Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Country Town: And Other Poems When the author of Ludibria Lunae and the Paradise of Birds died, in the spring of 1917, after a short illness, a hope was expressed that some record would be forthcoming of a sunny and delightful life, rich in completed work, both official and literary. But Mrs. Courthope followed her husband after an interval of a few months, and many of the friends who would have shared the interest and supplied personal memories and connecting links are already beyond our reach. Though a ready and a very graceful letter-writer, Mr. Courthope is not known to have corresponded largely with those who might have preserved his letters, on matters of general importance. His opinions on literary questions, which he consistently faced in their connexion with life and national spirit, are fully and vigorously expressed in his own books and in the many articles which he contributed to periodicals; and his feelings for all that could touch the imagination, especially for home and the life of rural England, stand out in the occasional poems, many of them written in later life, which are represented by the specimens now offered. It is only necessary to supply the framework of facts underlying a happy and a worthy life. William John Courthope was born on July 17, 1842, at South Mailing in Sussex, of which parish his father, the Reverend William Courthope, was the rector. His mother, before her marriage Caroline Elizabeth Ryle, was a sister of the first Bishop of Liverpool. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
