He is not a professional scholar or student of the Classics. But he has managed to collect practically all the most important passages bearing on his subject, and to put them together in a striking and original way. His object in making the collection is clearly stated by himself in the General Preface. In India the publication was meant in the first in stance to help educated Hindus to feel that the Life of Christ and the facts of the early development of Christianity enter into the main stream of the History of the Roman Empire and are capable of verification by the same evidence as that of the generally accepted facts of that history, and that in consequence they stand as facts on a very different ground from the legends of Krishna.
