Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Early Letters of Marcus Dods, Late Principal of New College, Edinburgh, 1850-1864 In its main aspect the following collection of letters is essentially the autobiography of a probationer of the Free Church of Scotland in the middle of last century. That it includes letters that in a sense do not come within that description, and particularly letters of the writer´s more youthful age, is due partly to an idea that this volume may be followed by another containing letters of later date, and that the two may thus cover practically the whole of Principal Marcus Dods´ life. It was, no doubt, remarkable that one who afterwards obtained in full measure the recognition of his Church, should have to endure so long a probation. His contemporaries have spoken of his bearing, and especially of his industry, during the six years of waiting; and his case has often been cited for the encouragement of others in like position. Only now, in these letters, is the first hint given that there was a more serious side to the picture, and that this may have been the real ´Sturm und Drang´ period of his whole life.
