Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Serum Diagnosis of Disease It has been a source of disappointment to many that the study of bacteriology has not furnished to the practitioner as many clews to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment as might have been hoped, judging from the position of central importance assumed by micro-organisms in modern pathology. Bacteriology has helped our diagnosis of cholera, our diagnosis and prognosis of tuberculosis and malaria, our diagnosis and treatment of diphtheria and tetanus. But of late years, previous to the discovery of the method of serum diagnosis, there has been a decided break in the series of clinically helpful discoveries in the domain of bacteriology. The interest aroused over the problem of acquired immunity has, however, revived our hopes as to the value of bacteriological research, and has led, moreover, to the opening out of several new avenues of approach toward the central mysteries of disease. One of the corollaries or byproducts of the immense amount of labor and thought which have been expended of late years upon the problem of immunity is the discovery of the method of serum diagnosis. I do not know a better way of exemplifying the scope and value of the serum diagnosis than by giving an account of the use which was recently made of it in investigating the fevers so rife this summer among the American soldiers in Cuba and Porto Rico. In studying the cases of the first batch of soldiers brought from Santiago to the Massachusetts General Hospital it was brought home to all of us who saw them that the ordinary methods of investigation and diagnosis left us very much in the dark.
