Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Memorials of John Curwen Men of wit and taste came to listen to him, and an old Somersetshire man at Frome bore this testimony to his preaching: - "Ha didd zeem ta I, as iv ha didd stand under the dree a life, a pluckin´ the vroots, and vlinggin them out into the buzzums o´ the peeple." Translation: "He did seem to me as if he did stand under the tree of life, a plucking the fruits, and flinging them into the bosoms of the people." He was a man of firmness as well as sympathy, and, as in the hitter discussion on Catholic Emancipation, did not hesitate to take the unpopular side if he was convinced that it was right. Spedding Curwen was twice married, and the student of heredity will naturally enquire about the mother of John Curwen. She was Mary, daughter of Mr. John Jubb, of Leeds, and the two were married soon after Mr. Curwen´s settlement at Heckmondwike, 1814. Mrs. Curwen, the mother of John, was a woman of education and culture. She seems to have been engaged in teaching before her marriage. In the spring of 1813 she accompanied a friend in a carriage drive from London to Penzance and back, lasting three months.
