Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Letters of John Hay, 1908, Vol. 1: And Extracts From Diary Custom, amounting to rule, requires the building of some memorial for men of note at their death, - the carving of some statue, - the painting of some portrait, - suited to their careers; not to instruct the public but to please and satisfy their friends. As these memorials multiply and become a large branch of art and literature, both writers and readers show preference for figures that stand free, and for workmanship that places no artificial medium between the man and the public. Especially the men of many sides, - artists, poets, wits, men-of-the-world, - reject flattery, tolerate no artifice, want to be viewed in no strange light, and shame the literary workman who is so bold as to risk the chances of a comparison between his own powers and the subject he is trying to adorn or exhibit. The method is sometimes hard in manner and always fragmentary, but is less annoying to the reader than the obtrusion of a third person; and it has been adopted in trying to collect material intended not to give John Hay his place in history, but to preserve the features and figure of the man as he moved or talked or showed himself to his friends and to society.
