New Yorkers and Bostonians looked upon Wisconsin as a place on the borders of nowhere; a semi-barbarous land, where the bowie-knife and revolver settled all disputes, where youths grew beards at twenty, and maidens learnt to use a rifle in their teens. Nothing could be further from the truth. Frontier simplicity there was in plenty, but rowdyism and lawlessness did not exist. Yet a Washington man would have thought the place archaic.
