Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Ready-Money Mortiboy: A Matter-of-Fact Story On the appearance of a new edition of "Ready-money Mortiboy," I beg permission to say a few words on the literary partnership which began with this novel in 1872, and terminated with "The Seamy Side" in 1881. Ten years of continuous work, cheered by such a measure of success as we had not ventured to hope for, and undisturbed by the least jar or disagreement, cannot be looked back upon without mingled feelings of sorrow that the end came in so unexpected a manner, and of gratitude that the work was so successful. My acquaintance with James Rice was made early in the year 1868. He left Cambridge in 1867 - he was at Queen´s - and began his London career by entering at the Temple, having then the full intention of practising at the Bar. As he was also ambitious in other directions, he seized the opportunity, which presented itself at the time, of buying that unlucky journal Once a Week. I believe that the paper was never at any time a valuable property, and by the year 1868 it had got well launched upon that downward slope from which no Editor in the world can lift a journal, once it has fairly begun to roll down. My introduction to him was as follows. I sent, in the winter of 1867-68, to the Editor of Once a Week a paper containing an account of a visit to the island of Réunion and an ascent of the Piton de Neige, the highest peak on the island.
