Excerpt from Reprinted Glossaries I hope that such readers as may be somewhat tired of seeing a continuation of the Reprinted Glossaries will kindly take into account the great value they have for zealous and earnest students. With the present Part, we come almost to an end of the more important of what may be called the minor Glossaries. Those who wish to work at dialects can only be thankful for the time and expense saved by such reprints as are given in the present volume. The reader will find here collected all the dialectal words contained in no less than ten volumes, since Kennett´s work (ed. 1818) is in two volumes, Britton´s Beauties of Wiltshire in three, and Glossary XIX. also contains words from the Monthly Magazine for 1814. Little need be said here about the several Glossaries, as each has a brief Introduction of its own prefixed to it; but I may add a few words as to the copies to which I had access. The original edition (1695) of Kennett´s Parochial Antiquities I have never been able to see; the edition of 1818 is in the Cambridge University Library; and of the edition of 1816 I have a copy of my own. The two latter have been carefully collated. I am also indebted to the same library for the use of Britton´s Beauties of Wiltshire and the Monthly Magazine. Of Akerman´s Glossary, Spurdens´ East-Anglian Words, and Cullum´s History of Hawsted, I possess copies of my own. The supplementary words to Marshall´s East-Yorkshire words were transcribed by myself from a copy kindly lent by Mr. Parish.
