Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Practical Observations on the Venereal Disease, and on the Use of Mercury When I was invited, on the part of the Council of the New Sydenham Society, to edit selections from the works of Abraham Colles, I gladly undertook the task. I felt that it would not be labour thrown away to collect into one volume the scattered fragments of work accomplished by one whom I have always admired as having done much for the School of Surgery in his own country, and who is an example to all of what may be achieved by accurate observations, and truthful record of those observations. I will confess, however, that I had little idea of how difficult a task I had undertaken, in proposing to introduce such comments and annotations as I might think proper. The truth is, I found that it was not possible to annotate the greater part of Colle´s writings, with a view to bring them up to the present day. Such writings form a part of the classical literature of the subject of which they treat; they must be read as such, the reader ever bearing in mind the period at which they were written. Thus and thus only can we form a fair idea of the part such works take in the gradual advancement of knowledge. We must compare them with the views and doctrines put forth before they appeared. We must see how far they aided in accomplishing the further steps of progress made in later times. Abraham Colles prided himself chiefly upon his introduction of the treatment of syphilis by small doses of mercury.
