The first Montague House was burnt to the ground January 19, 1686, "than which," says Evelyn in his Diary, "for painting and furniture there was nothing more glorious in England." Lady Rachel Russell, who lived at Bedford House close by, witnessed its destruction, and mentions it in her letters. The second Montague House, which was to become the British Museum, stood in what was then a suburb of London, and with its beautiful gardens covered a space of nearly eight acres.
