Nor has it been possible for me - my object being to describe the principal facts of the French Revolution and First Empire - to comment largely on the institutions of old France, or to show fully how they contributed to the events that followed 1789. An abridgement cannot be a real History; and, apart from defects peculiar to it, I am conscious that this volume must at best be an imperfect miniature of the grand drama of human action and life which it endeavors to delineate.
