Dirksen Senate Office Building, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (chairman of the committee) residing. Present: Senators Kennedy, Metzenbaum, Dodd, Wellstone, Kassebaum, Thurmond, and Durenberger. Opening Statement of Senator Kennedy The Chairman. committee will come to order. At the outset of the hearing, I want to express very sincere appreciation to the witnesses and to the families who are joining us here today. This hearing was scheduled a week ago and then, because of the Senate schedule, it was necessary to reschedule it to today. So we are grateful to all of those who have made the special effort to come back again and be with us on this subject of enormous importance and significance from a public health point of view and most importantly from the point of view of the health needs of thousands of families, children, older people, all. So we are grateful to all of our witnesses and to the families who are so interested and concerned about this matter and whose interests we want to pursue. Last week, we instructed the staff to conduct personal interviews with many of those who were here, and there is just a remarkable collection of stories, and we have communicated back to the particular families and indicated that we wanted to make those part of the record. They will be made a part of today´s record. It was an enormously valuable and useful exercise. I have in my hand and we have distributed the statements of the diseased patients, family members, and other experts, and it is really a remarkable collection of information and knowledge and will be very, very helpful to us on this committee, and I am personally grateful to all of those who spent the time to reveal some very difficult and painful experiences with us, and I am grateful to all of them for making it possible to include those comments as part of the record.
