Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Memorial of Charles Sumner, From the City of Boston Charles Sumner died suddenly at the National Capital on Wednesday, the eleventh of March, 1874, at ten minutes before three o´clock, P. M. The sad intelligence was intermediately communicated to the Mayor of Boston, who ordered the flags on the public buildings to be displayed at half-mast, and called a special meeting of the two branches of the City Council for the following day at twelve o´clock, noon. At the meeting of the Board of Aldermen a message from the Mayor was read, as follows: - Executive Department, City Hall, Boston, March 12, 1874. To the Honorable the City Council: - Gentlemen, - The mournful duty devolves upon me of calling you together to receive the official announcement of the death of Charles Sumner, who, during a period of twenty-three years, has been the honored and trusted representative of our people in the highest councils of the nation. It is fitting that the city of Boston should do honor to one of her citizens, who has always devoted his great abilities to the advancement of freedom and the establishment of just and equal laws.
