Excerpt from The Catholic Case Stated: Or, Principles, Working, and Results of the System of National Education; With Suggestions for the Settlement of the Education Question Owing to many causes, some inherent in the subject, others arising from the laisser faire tendencies of the people, but the most of them resulting from powerful influences which sustain the National System, I anticipated not only indifference, but incredulity, and, possibly, a large share of censure, should I publish a statement of the abuses and evils of the System, unsupported by evidence at once, clear, full, and incontrovertible. With an experience of Popular Education large in extent and varied in kind, and a command of the amplest materials of information on the subject, I addressed myself to the preparation of this Case with those difficulties present to my mind, and influencing me from its first conception to its final completion. I venture to express reasonable confidence, not that the work will escape attack, but that it is beyond the power of any one to controvert its leading statements, or disprove any of the general conclusions drawn from them. You will observe, My Lords, that the evidence adduced, in support of the propositions which I advance, is of the highest order, and embraces the sworn testimony of a number of persons eminent in station - Parliamentary Inquiries and Returns - Official Reports, Correspondence and Papers - Extracts from numerous Works on the Education Controversy - various Ecclesiastical Documents, and many peculiar sources of information of the most important character. In fact, the unexpected delay in the publication of the Book, has arisen mainly from the difficulty of arranging and weighing the huge mass of evidence at my disposal, a fraction of which would suffice to prove the conclusions here established.
