The popular pineapple varieties are Cayenne, grown over 90% of pineapple Plantations, Hilo, Pernambuca – grown in Brazil – and Red Spanish grown in Florida, Cuba and Puerto Rico. The fruit is nearly always seedless and seating plans from a meeting which some good enough to make clonal varieties are rare. However, breeding stations all over the world are trying to find promising seedlings, even though the process is slow, owing to the small number of shoots for propagation from a plant and the large number of plants required for one acre. The pineapple plant is a herbaceous plant growing up to 3 feet tall and a little bit more and has a spread of 4 – 5 feet in its 2nd year of fruiting. That is only if planting distances and cultural practices permit the free spreading of the plant.
