Denmark, during the last half century, has passed through the throes of a wonderful regeneration. Her peasantry has been emancipated from a condition of veritable serfdom; her education has been liberalised; her land system, agriculture and finance have been re-organised and brought to a pitch of excellence which is the envy of many a greater, yet less perfectly developed, state. One of the present writers is English, and the other, Danish. They may therefore justly claim for the book that it is an attempt to see Denmark from within and without. Quotations and sources of information have been given wherever possible throughout the text; but the authors have to acknowledge much assistance generously rendered to them by friends, both Danish and English, whose names are too numerous to mention.
