Perplexing, then, as our reason may imagine the explanation to be, the two cannot be incompatible; yet how is it that after so many centuries of discussion there is as yet no universally accepted solution? Can it be that the premises, upon which the thousand theories proceed, need reexamination? No harm can be done, at least, by such review, if it is conducted in a proper spirit; and it is such a discussion that we have here attempted.
