Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Radical Cure for Ireland: A Letter to the People of England and Scotland Concerning a New Plantation Sir Arthur Chichester, an English Puritan of moderate views, was Lord Deputy of Ireland from 1604 to 1616, and chief organiser of the Great Plantation. He was born in 1563, the second son of Sir John Chichester of Rawleigh, near Barnstaple. He served against the Armada, and afterwards with Henry IV. of France, who knighted him at the siege of Amiens. He was appointed Governor of Carrickfergus in 1599, and served as a major-general in Tyrone´s war. In 1603 he was made a Privy Councillor, and in 1613 raised to the peerage as Lord Chichester of Belfast. He got a grant of the northern coast of Belfast Lough in Tyrone´s war, and of the peninsula of Innishowen on the forfeiture of O´Doherty in 1607. On his death in 1625, these estates passed to his brother Edward, whose son Arthur was the first Earl of Donegall.
