Excerpt from Notes on the Problems of Extreme Individual Differences in Children of the Public Schools: A Report to the Superintendent of Public Schools Concerning a Preliminary Study of the Problems of Exceptional Children and of Certain Related Questions; An Inquiry Begun Through the Cooperation of Teachers, Principals, Physicians, Social Workers, Psychol In the study of the central tendencies in school of large masses of children by modern statistical methods, New Orleans has little that is new to report in the way of convenient statistical methods or of results. It should also be under stood that no claim is herein made that the procedure created in New Orleans for co-ordinating practically the efforts of many kinds of workers in behalf of the individual study of exceptional children is more than a successful, experimental demonstration of a sound principle, in application capable of improvements and wider use. In these notes summarizing the work of a year no excessive emphasis is intended upon the scientific value of the concrete individual studies presented. It is believed, aside from considerable benefits which have accrued indirectly to many unfortunate children, and aside from the intelligent public interest aroused in the educational problems which are centered about the extremely exceptional child, that it is worth while to make this permanent record of what is becoming known as the New Orleans procedure for studying exceptional children. The number of individual cases studied during the year is too small to warrant elaborate subdivisions and analysis of these concrete cases into types. In each case thoroughly studied, however, where all the desired data as planned have been collected systematically from parent, teacher, physician, psychologist and sociologist, and then summarized, a more nearly truthful statement of the child´s condition and the causes leading thereto has been made than could possibly have been drawn by psychologist, physician, teacher, parent or sociologist working alone.
