Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Celtic and Scandinavian Antiquities of Shetland The history and antiquities of Shetland have at all times possessed for me an absorbing interest; and this it has fortunately been in my power to gratify, during a long series of years, in a practical way, by the excavation of ancient structures now in ruins; by discoveries of remains of the prehistoric age and of inscribed and sculptured monuments of the Celts and Scandinavians who in succession have occupied the islands; as well as by glimpses, often unexpected and curious, of local life in the olden time, which have rewarded the exploration of many musty records. In the General Register House, in the Charter House of the City of Edinburgh, in the Advocates´ Library, in the Sheriff Court depositories of Shetland, and in the charter-chests of old families of the county, many treasures in the line of my inquiries are stored. These treasures have all been readily and most courteously placed at my disposal whenever desired; and my best thanks are due to the public officials and private gentlemen who have been so willing in every way to aid me in my efforts. My regret is that limitations of my own time have compelled those researches to be so brief and so cursory.
