It was first published under the title of "The Romance of Abelard and Heloise," and has long been out of print. The title was unfortunate, inasmuch as it gave rise to the impression that we had been rhapsodizing about the renowned lovers, instead of writing their lives. We respond to the demand for a new edition, and send it forth with a new title, with revision, and with much additional matter. In translating the letters, we left in the original Latin a very few passages that we did not care to render literally.
