Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Rebellion, Slavery, and Peace The grounds alleged as justifying the rebellion of the South under the claim of State Eights, Nullification, Secession, and the doctrine that there is no power to coerce a State, were considered by me, as preliminary to the subject of the present address on "Rebellion, Slavery and Peace," but are omitted, as it was found the whole could not be well embraced in one address. It is sufficient to say they furnish no just pretense of excuse for Southern rebellion. A farther complaint is made, as justifying or extenuating rebellion, founded on the movements of abolitionists. A candid examination of complaints from this cause, to ascertain how far they are within the Constitution, and to what extent beyond it, would show no just ground of rebellion. A like examination of the ultraisms of slavery, and its encroachments on the Constitution, would furnish as much ground of complaint against the South, at least, as can be urged against the North. Such complaints arc immaterial as a ground of present action. No examination of them can shield Rebellion and Disunion from the utter abhorrence of any considerate mind. No party can stand upon them with the sanction of the people. In the Address the remark is made, that "a great responsibility now rests upon us, as, with a united North, rebellion would at once cease." The first ground relied upon by the South to sustain them, was, that there would not be here a determined resistance to rebellion; that disunion would exist, and "blood would flow at the North."
