Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Union Biblical Seminary: Bible Conference The opening session of the Bible Conference was held in the Summit Street United Brethren Church, and after the singing of several songs and prayer, J. Campbell White delivered the opening address, taking as the basis of his remarks Matt. 23:34-35; Matt. 24:31-46. J. Campbell White´s Opening Address. This is the least which is to be applied to our lives finally. We arc going to talk about methods during this conference. I believe it will, therefore, be appropriate this evening to talk about the supreme test that is to be applied to our lives finally. I cannot remember now who the writer is that thus describes the spirit of neighborliness of which we have just read, but I want to talk about that test here at the beginning of this conference. What would you answer if I were to ask you, What is the greatest sin in the world? If I were to get from each of you an answer to that question. I presume we would have a great deal of variety here to-night. Most of von would probably put your finger down and say the breaking of this or that commandment is the greatest sin. I would like to refer you to the commandment we read awhile ago, which is the reply of our Lord in answer to the question, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment of the law? And he said unto him. Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with nil thy soul, and with nil thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou slink love thy neighbor as thyself. On these hang the whole law and the prophets." If there is a first and greatest commandment, must not the brooking of that commandment lie the greatest sin? It. is possible to brook the whole decalogue at once by failing to fulfill the obligation laid on us by our Lord when lie said. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself." The Lord would make sure that each one of us loves our neighbor just as much as we do ourselves. Paul went a little further and said in Galatians 5:14, "For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." He seems for the moment to lie out of view of the commandment Jesus gave concerning love to God, and, as it were, to forget it. We wonder why Paul should speak not a single word concerning the obligation of love to God, and should give only that one injunction, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself"?
