They do not pretend to form any unity except in so far that the larger set concerns topics of French literature. Most of them have already seen the light of ephemeral publication; some were read before the Speculative Society of Edinburgh, and one or two now come before the world for the first time. On looking over them, I am painfully conscious that some of the earlier ones (earlier, I mean, in point of time, not in point of place) show marked traces of immaturity and of imitation.
