Excerpt from A Voyage in the Indian Ocean and to Bengal, Undertaken in the Year 1790: Containing an Account of the Sechelles-Islands and Trincomale; The Character and Arts of the People of India; With Some Remarkable Religious Rites of the Inhabitants of Bengal; To Which Is Added, a Voyage in the Red Sea; Including a Description of Mocha I Was at the Isle of France in the year 1793, with a vessel too large and too sharp for the country. Not being able to dispose of her, I resolved on a trip to Bengal, where I hoped to find a good price and a ready market, though her construction was ill adapted to the navigation of the Ganges. But appearances being in her favour, this defect I trusted would be overlooked, and I was not mistaken. I accordingly prepared for my departure, and was soon ready for sea. Several motives, and economy among the rest, determined me to discharge ail my Europeans, and work the (hip with black Indians, known by the name of Lascars; but, finding it impossible to procure them, I was under the necessity of putting up with thirty Manillese, whose pusillanimity and want of skill rendered the passage extremely difficult. The first vexation I experienced was their causing me to miss the harbour of the Isle of Bourbon, where I intended to have taken in fresh provisions.
