Among the great number of writers of this name - and Allibone gives more than three hundred in his Dictionary of Authors - there are none more beloved, more worthy of mention, than this family, so called to distinguish them from all the others. From the time of the eloquent Jeremy Taylor, and his scurrilous contemporary, the "Water Poet," noted for his pasquils and ballads on the Royalist side, and the vast numbers of these effusions, every department of literature has had the name on its list. "The most eloquent of divines! had I said of men," of whom Coleridge said, "Cicero would forgive this statement and Demosthenes nod assent," worthily heads the long list of Taylors. Among the contemporaries of Ann and Jane were so many noted names that some distinctive appellation was really needed for them. There was Taylor, the "Platonist;" John Taylor, of Norwich, the friend of Mrs. Barbauld, noted for his great learning as Hebraist: Tom Taylor, the dramatist, is a very popular name; and William Taylor, of Norwich, one of Mrs. Barbauld´s scholars, takes rank as England´s first student of the literature of Germany.
