Excerpt from The Modern Part of an Universal History, Vol. 30: From the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time, Complied From Original Authors The return of Gustavus to the camp was no fooner known in Stockholm than the governor sent deputies to him, offering to submit at diffraction, and leaving his ma-jefty absolute matter of the terms of surrender. Gustavus received them graciously, and demanded that all the money, papers, and moveables, belonging to Chriftian, to his viceroy, aichbifhoo Trolls, and admiral Norby, should be delivered into his hands. He permitted the garrison, in consideration of their brave defence, to march out with their arms, baggage, and the honours of war, but on condition that they should not carry arms against Sweden for the fpace of fix months. He engaged to transport them to Lubec, and promised the burghers that he would, with pleasure, inviolable preserve the privileges of the city. The terms were accepted, the garrison marched out, and Gustavus, accompanied by the senators, nobility, gentry, and officers, magnificently drefled, made his public entry. The confuls and magift rates met him at the gate, and on their knees prcfcntcd the keys of the city to his majesty. The people crowded among the folders to behold their prince; the fly was rent with their acclamations ., all were charmed with the fact nefs and majesty of his air; and inching could be heard but their fit outs and erics. Gustavus next went to the great church, to return thanks to God for his signal mercies in bluffing his arms with fuch extraordinary fucccfs; then he gave a grand entertainment to the fenate, nobility, and general officers. Gustavus had no longer gained poliflor of his capital than he began to exert the functions of a king. Orders were issued to all the provinces to acknowledge his authority; governors were appointed, and garrisons drafted for the fortresses, with llriet injunctions to all officers, civil and literary, immediately to proceed to their several departments Every hour in the day was employed in the business of the nation. He received persons of quality with rc fpcci, and men of merit with that peculiar graciousness that diftinguiflicd the patron and the friend. The people, oppressed with the facticity of the laft reign, began now to breathe; commerce revived, and Sweden, delivered from the cruel tyranny of her ancient enemies, enjoyed all the facts of peace and liberty, under a generous, brave* and patriot monarch.
