Excerpt from A Handy Book on the Law of Husband and Wife: Engagements to Marry; Property Settlements; Wife´s Separate Rights; The Spouses´ Liabilities; Protection Maintenance; Divorce Separation Thirty-Two years ago I wrote the first edition of this book, thinking it important that the public should have at hand a short and plainly written treatise on the subjects dealt with. The respective rights of husband and wife as to property; their contractual and other liabilities towards the world and one another; the various proceedings in the Divorce Court, with their results; and the relations of parent and guardian to child and ward appeared to me to be matters in which any family might at any time come to be concerned. The first edition was followed by several others, two of which were necessitated respectively by the Married Women´s Property Acts of 1870 and 1874. Since then the Married Women´s Property Act, 1882, has increased the area of property which a wife can deal with as her own, and has gone further towards setting her free in commercial and other business and employments. This Act is so defective both in expression and arrangement, that one would imagine it was hurriedly introduced, and was afterwards amended, by various hands in its passage through Parliament.
