Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Art Prices Current, 1914-1915, Vol. 8: Being a Record of Sale Prices at Christie´s During the Season; Together With Representative Prices From the Sales of Messrs. Puttick Simpson, With an Index to Artists´ and Engravers´ Names and to the Titles and Subjects Sold The size of this, the first volume recording art prices at auction during the War, has undergone considerable diminution as the result of that great event. As will be seen, the first of Christie´s sales, which should normally have been held in November, 1914, did not take place until April, 1915, while Sotheby´s rooms remained closed to art collectors and dealers during the whole season. These circumstances were doubtless due to the fear of the effect which the War would have upon the market for pictures and engravings. As the volume shows, however, this fear proved to to be ill-founded, prices on the whole being well maintained at the pre-War level. It is to be noted, however, that during the season no collections of the highest quality and importance were submitted to auction. At the same time, the prices in this volume will be found to be fully equal in general interest to those contained in previous volumes, whilst historical importance attaches to the record of the great sale at Christie´s in aid of the Red Cross Fund, which extended over several days in April, 1915.
