Excerpt from Manufacturers and Corn-Growers: A Letter to the Public On the introduction of the present Corn Laws, they were stated to be, a compromise between conflicting interests, a balancing between opposite parties and opinions; but this is an unsound principle to carry out, a narrow basis on which to legislate. We do indeed in political parlance, speak of the Agricultural interest, the Manufacturing interest, the Commercial and the Shipping interests; but the merchant, the ship-owner, the manufacturer and the landholder, are but links of one chain: you may give names to each link, but they remain still mutually dependent upon, and connected with, each other. Legislation ought to be for one interest, that of the public, and upon one principle, that of the greatest good, to the greatest number.
