It was on a visit to New York in 1872. I had spent the evening at the "Century Club," the resort of authors, artists, and others of similar tastes. In the throng one person had specially attracted my attention. He was a man of from forty-five to fifty, low of stature, but broad-shouldered and powerful. His head was large, and his long hair, just touched with gray, fell to his shoulders. The face was very striking. Under a massive and prominent forehead rolled a pair of brilliant eyes, curious and penetrating. The lips were firm, and not a little sarcastic in expression; his complexion pale, like that of a student working much in the night hours.
