The materials for such a history have sometimes been found in an autobiographical sketch, in a diary, in a copious and varied correspondence, or in oral communications. In the present case, all these materials are scanty. A very brief notice of his school and college life is all that Mr. Wellbeloved has left; his diaries are little more than hour-tables of each day´s work and engagements, valuable as evidence of the methodical employment of his time, and the variety of his occupations, but generally without detail of events, or expression of sentiment.
