Imperialism had been weakened in its authority and influence by the contests in which it had been involved through the fault of those who wore the imperial crown, and those contests had also so injured the papacy as to compel it to have recourse to France. France, in virtue of its ancient and intimate relations to the Holy See, arrogated to itself claims far too high. It was the dependence of the Popes on French policy that had induced them to transfer their residence to Avignon; and the endeavor, on the one hand, of the Popes to free themselves from this yoke by returning to Rome, and on the other the efforts made by France to secure the advantages it had gained, led to the forty years´ schism.
