Scarcely less interesting are the examples of his genius as shown in the title-pages and frontispieces, religious, secular, or classical in subject, which he drew for the books of his day. This, the first loan collection ever made of his works in America, is not complete, but contains enough early states, many of them very rare, to make plain to the connoisseur the reasons for the high rank which he holds among engravers, and to permit his art to be studied in all of its varied and brilliant manifestations.
