Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Romances of Alexandre Dumas: The Chevalier D´harmental La Reine Margot first appeared in 1845, quickly following Les Trois Mousquetaires. In fact, the issue of the story, as a feuilleton, had begun on Christmas Day, 1844. This was the romancer´s great period, when ancient history came to his pen like a contemporary tale, with a kind of contemporary sensation. Maquet was his collaborator, and whatever else Maquet did or did not do, he very positively stimulated the master-artificer´s invention. The difference between the historical romances in which he bore a part and those in which others like Meurice were concerned may be traced by comparing a book like Les Deux Dianes with La Reine Margot. Dumas had a period rich in the dramatic and narrative sequence that suited his fantasy in sixteenth-century France. We are now very near St. Bartholomew. The ninth Charles has come to the throne, and his mother, with a powerful, furtive hand, is intriguing against Henry of Navarre, in whom she discerns a future rival to her own beloved Henry, and whose death, therefore, it is her one desire to compass. The story of La Reine Margot is the dramatic history of the struggle between these two combatants. "On the one side all the devices of murder - the secret assassin, the drugs of Rene the Florentine, the lip-salve for Madame de Sauve, whose lips Henri often touches, the poisoned page of the book which, missing its intended victim, kills the king´s favourite hound and more slowly the king himself. On the other side Henri of Navarre avoiding the various snares, partly by his own shrewd opportunism - for when it is a question of Mort, Messe, or Bastille he does not hesitate to profess himself a Catholic... partly by the help of his wife. Queen Margot, who is a good friend to her husband;... and partly also by the good offices of his brother-in-law."
