Women´s Right to Reproduce in Nigeria: CEDAW in Perspective

Article 16(1)(e) of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) contains provisions relating to women´s right to choose. This study, employing the use of both doctrinal and empirical analysis show case the fact that, the right to choose as contained within CEDAW actually represent the right women has to reproduce, and not the right they have to abort. The right to reproduce will have to be read into CEDAW as far as Nigeria is concerned. This, according to the author will pave the way for future reproductive right policies in Nigeria, especially the long awaited domestication and implementation of CEDAW in Nigeria.
