How do the professional identity and professional commitment development within nursing? For her dissertation about this topic the author interviewed more than 500 trainees, occupational health workers and nurses in Germany as well as Swiss nursing students. Another stimulus was the group discussion with nurses who had longstanding professional experiences. The questions focussed on the areas design and process of the training as well as positive and negative factors of influence on the professional self-conception of interviewees. The results of the interviews were compared with findings from other professional education programmes. The results lead to recommendations relating to the design of the nursing training and the development of sustainable professional competences. Thereby, the author takes into consideration the current debate relating to generalisation, academisation and entrance qualifications for the nursing training.
