The dissolution of the Soviet Union made new forms ofencounters possible between East and West. One ofthem was transnational marriages between Russianwomen and Western men. The main goal of this book isto understand the context surrounding thesemarriages. We intend to avoid making the immigrantsthe single object of study by also rendering themajority population and society visible and problematic.The main question addressed in the book is: How areborders, rights, relations and positions gendered inRussian-Norwegian encounters? To address this complexquestion we explore several different dimensions byuse of various methods and analytical approaches. Weaddress the civic or citizenship rights of theRussian women and their opportunities forparticipation in the Norwegian society. We ask howRussian and Norwegian femininities and masculinitiesare spoken into existence and made relevant innegotiating gendered and national positions. What isconsidered legitimate marriages/relationships? How doRussian-Norwegian marriages challenge what isconsidered acceptable?
